A really well explained overview of the basic function of the heart.
A slightly dated but excellent video animation and description by a doctor of how the heart does its job.
Worth noting that deoxygenated blood isn’t actually blue – its a dark red, while the oxygenated blood is a much richer, bright red.
Another really good video, by a paediatrician, on the flow of blood through the heart.
This is a nice short video from the well-respected Mayo Clinic, and shows the valves working, as well as the electric signals that keep the heart beating regularly.

Another one minute video – by this point you should have an awareness of how the heart works as a pump and its relation to the lungs.
Some things you can do:
1. Make a set of classified cards of the parts of the heart
2. Make charts tell the story of how the heart works:
- Movement of blood between heart and organs
- Movement of blood within the heart
- Movement of blood between heart and lungs
- The job of the valves
- The job of the coronary arteries
3. Make a model of the heart using clay, or soapstone
4. Make a working model of the heart. There are two videos below. The first shows how to model the heart as a pump, with a focus on making your own valves. The second is difficult to follow but gives you an impression of a model you can create with lungs and organs included.
