Thoughts on an Ofsted Inspection.

Our mission

Our mission, as set out in our Parent Handbook, is as follows.

Our vision is for each child to live fully in the present and so create a better future.

Our purpose is to aid each child’s natural development from the beginning of life until age 12

Our approach is to

Trust the deep inner drive each child has to meaningfully contribute to their community;

Create environments that allow each child to joyfully discover the world and their place in it;

Collaborate with parents in the loving service of their child.

To fulfil this mission we are led by Montessori principles and practice, following the training and guidance of the Association Montessori Internationale.

 We constantly review what we are doing with the children against these pedagogical standards.

Our Ofsted Inspection

Back in those Christmassy days in mid-December we had our first Early Years (0-5) inspection by Ofsted.  The Inspector was very pleased to tell us that we were ‘Good’ (as opposed to Outstanding, Satisfactory or Inadequate).

While we have great respect for the legal requirements and guidance set out for us in various regulations, our primary aim has never been to meet the Ofsted standard of ‘Outstanding’. We pay due regard to the views expressed by changing legislation, but our primary guide remains the vision of human development first described by Dr. Maria Montessori in 1907, and now validated by empirical research and the latest discoveries in neuroscience.

However, purely based on Ofsted’s standards there are a number of areas where we believe we do meet Ofsted’s measure of ‘Outstanding’, and that this was not recognised by the Inspector.   As a result we have written back to Ofsted, outlining our response to the Inspection report.  The Inspection report and our response are both attached for you to read.

Yours sincerely,

Rob, Paul and Karen
